Job demands, organizational justice, and emotional exhaustion in prison officers

Prison officers experience a number of occupational and organizational stressors, are at considerable risk burnout. There has been limited research examining the processes by which demands impact on their burnout risk. Drawing job demands-resources model, we tested distributive justice perceptions as mediator for relationship between workload violence with emotional exhaustion. We further whether supervisor-focused interactional would be associated reduced exhaustion via stress culture (i.e. perceived ability to discuss stress-related problems managers). UK prison (N = 1792) completed an online survey. Findings indicated that, while was directly justice, experiences only linked Interactional significantly problems, but association weak. suggest positive manager-subordinate relationships not sufficient meaningfully enhance psychological wellbeing. Instead highlight need manage officers’ workload.
